anxieties and anvils
Issue #179
Kids are geniuses - they honor and respect truth above all else.
Morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples. A little matutinal Sunday tear, ladies and gents.
😱 Anxieties and Anvils. Grand pianos are falling from the sky. Or at least that is what the media wants you to think. And who’s to say the media’s wrong, even if it knowingly influences what the citizenry thinks? But regardless of your level of optimism, “anxiety” is a word firmly planted in the lexicon that held no power 100 years ago. Man always had fear (written in our bone), but not the fear of fear. That’s a new one. I’ll lazily chalk it up to cell phones and facebook, k?Anxiety’s a stubborn tremor that keeps people from going outside, speaking up, and “imposing” themselves on others. Nineteenth century Russian writer Dostoevsky covered the whole panoply of human emotion, but I’m not sure anxiety (how we understand the term today) was one of them. A survey last year reported that 90% of Americans think we are in a mental health crisis, which could be renamed the anxiety crisis. Perception is reality. Because this phenomenon is so new, it’s both hard to treat/prevent and hard to discern if the epidemic is even real. 🍎Andrew's Take. Strap in for this one: there is absolutely zero reason why any of these anxiety-related issues (shut-ins, porn, antisocial behavior, friendlessness, detachment from community, rising crime) will improve. Sorry, but I’ll bet the ranch on this one. The yogis might explain away the current chaos with our approaching a new (Aquarian) age, which means the old (Piscean) age gets destroyed; any institutional destruction contains shrapnel and collateral damage and clips to the collective psyche. People get hurt. Alternatively, maybe we’ve always been swimming upstream, our own worst enemies, inventing novel ways to be unhappy, and this has been part of the human experiment since the ooze. Who knows who’s right? As I’ve said a million times, this should just be the clarion call to anyone that wishes to not participate in watching shit burn. We rather can start our own bonfires, transmuting “useless” emotions into useful tools. Anxiety - like depression and joy - has an undeniable energetic charge, an orange and yellow spark. Might as well put it to work.
