Battle of the Sixes

Issue #017

Here's your daily dose of Andrew's Apples, a small white bag of four fresh *fruits* to nourish your soul and make you feel great. All in under 2 minutes. Let's go picking.

  1. 🥒 Fermental. "Mental, that one..." Ron told pal Harry in The Sorcerer's Stone, negging his eventual sweetheart Hermoine. Twelve-year-olds imo intuitively know how to flirt best. But wanna know something not mental? Fermented foods, like yogurt, pickles, miso, kimchi, kelp, and kombucha. A 2021 IFIC survey found that consumers are increasingly interested in probiotics and prebiotics (two "good" bacteria found in fermented foods) to support positive gut health. More options include: garlic, onions, asparagus, and leeks. The gut is a complicated beast but when you get it under control, everything from digestion, inflammation, and immune health improve. Go with your gut.

  2. 💤 Battle of the Sixes. In a remote corner of the internet I once read about the 666 Rule. In essence, for a mating male it's ideal to be six feet tall with six pack abs making six figures. This, of course, on the surface seems unfair and absolutely mean and perhaps partly true. (Don't worry shorties, Brad Pitt is 5'11 and no longer in Fight Club shape). I will let those actually interested in men decide. Another "6" I would tack on to this list (if you will) is six hours of sleep. A study claims consistent <6 hour nights of sleep combined with chronic disease (this applies to up to 90% of the US population who're metabolically inflexible) increases your risk of cancer and heart disease. Always take these studies with a grain of salt, but hear me out when I say: Go back to bed. Recall that 7 (hours) is a holy number, the number of g*d.

  3. 🍋 Don Lemons. One unavoidable result of eating out (almost always jacked with sugar and butter and salt) is that your blood sugar spikes. This affects sleep, mood, and ability to lose weight. But I come with tricks :) because I want you to eat out and be a person. One cheap hack is to drink some lemon juice after a meal to lower blood glucose. Ask the waiter. It will also improve your stool the next day. Sour? Sweet!

  4. 🐽 Different fats of life. Dr. Peter Attia says that "not all fat is equal." There is subcutaneous fat ("fat between the skin and the fascia") and there is visceral fat ("fat beneath the fascia near the vital organs"). The one that's linked strongly to metabolic disease is visceral fat. Bad very bad: "In humans, there is compelling evidence that abdominal obesity [i.e., visceral fat] most strongly predicts mortality risk." Visceral fat % is a better predictor of holistic health than total body fat %, which is better still than BMI. Let it be known that BMI is a trashy boomer metric that refuses to die. It's helpful like the FDA food pyramid is helpful: not very. Know fat, be phat.

How do you like them Apples? Suggestions? Hate me? If you ever need anything, hit reply.
