Big Pharma hates supplements

Issue #117

Any adult who gets excited by their birthday is not living on their terms, a feather in the wind.

Good morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health email for grizzled garbage men and skinny Google employees alike. Two min. Let's go!

  1. 🥦 Big Pharma hates supplements. Two months ago, legislation was drafted that would in essence require supplements in the US to undergo the same approval process as drugs (trust me, it's brutal and long). The other strategy by huge drug companies has been to buy up all of the supplement companies; in fact, 14 mega corporations own 100+ of the most well known supplement brands (Centrum, Emergen-C, One-A-Day, etc.). So: either make it so hard and expensive to get to market OR gobble them up and dictate their marketing and distribution aims.

    1. 🍎 Andrew's Take. Look, if Dan makes drugs and Sam makes supplements, Dan and Sam are in direct competition for people who want to better their health. Their motives are profit-driven in a marketplace dynamic that ultimately brings profits to zero. My philosophy is that we should prioritize preventative health measures (food, exercise, sleep, supplements) over prescription drugs. Drugs have their place but they should not be causing much-needed vitamin and mineral brands to go tits-up.

  2. 🌱 Dance out of depression. The research keeps piling up on how exercise fights depression. It raises serotonin, boosts mood, activates opioid and endorphin receptors... all leading to you feeling better. Depression does not cause physical inactivity - it's likely the other way around.

    1. 🍎 Andrew's Take. Y'all already know!!!! We've talked about Paul Chek's four doctors before: dr. diet, dr. quiet, dr. happiness, and dr. movement. But sometimes it's hard to get the cleanest food, some peace and quiet, and lock into a positive state... but you can always step outside and jump around :)

  3. 🍭 Psychedelics are harmless, foreal!!! Fitness guru Ben Greenfield recently posted a long piece on why he is no longer casually using psychedelic compounds. Per usual, because it was even remotely controversial, a bunch of bug-eyed microdosing SF maxis freaked, naming him bad names and mocking his Christian faith, blah blah. His main point for discontinuing use? These plant medicines are traditionally used under serious medical supervision and/or for witchcraft, the occult, and other forms of spiritual divination. As someone who has routinely used many of these compounds, he warns that "you are opening yourself up to influence from a spiritual world that threatens to land you in a very dark place indeed."

    1. 🍎 Andrew's Take. I remember when I went to southern California a few years back and saw the medical marijuana shops on every street corner. Thousands of them, altogether making me feel that I should think not only is getting high always safe but that I should be smoking all the time. LOL! A drug is a drug and the makers of that drug want to sell a lot of it, so they do ads (propaganda) so you get high as often as possible. Same with those "HOT! FRESH! NOW!" coffee signs at gas stations - it's no different. Caffeine, alcohol, weed, LSD/mushrooms... whatever. When an entire legion of increasingly powerful people on the internet all agree on something, maybe we should stop and pinch ourselves. I mean, look at Bitcoin's fall from grace.

  4. 🕊️ Tweet of the Day. Again, there are never any hacks. But there are indeed extreme measures that can be taken... Calories in vs. calories out.

How about them Apples? Hit me with any comments or questions. Love hearing from you folks.
