Beware the D.O.S.E.
Issue #104
The single easiest way to find out how you feel about someone. Say goodbye.
Good morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health newsletter that's for the killers, not the killjoys. Two minutes. Let's go!
🧠 Beware the D.O.S.E. Hormones run your life. Four of them, in particular, dictate how you feel on a day to day basis: Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. Aka "D.O.S.E." Like a dose of any drug, it can be used to good and evil. Dopamine get released when you get a like on Instagram; oxytocin when you look into someone's (or some dog's!) eyes for 3+ sec; serotonin when something chills you out; endorphins when you go a nice run.
🍎 Andrew's Take. At their best, they keep you motivated at work and relaxed at play. At their worst, they have you clung to outcomes (which by definition are out of your control) and next thing you know, you're sad and ordering warm beers at Bennigan's. The D.O.S.E. will inevitably provide the ups and downs, so enjoy the bumpy ride.
🍁 Trader Joe's Hoe. It's the best value grocery store in the nation. High customer loyalty and happy workforce (Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah vibes) makes it tough to beat for specialty items (not my favorite for, say, produce - Whole Foods still best bet IMO). Some yummy metabolically healthy options at TJ's include: spicy cashew butter dressing; Jicama wrap; turkey burgers; cauliflower rice; Spindrift seltzer water; spicy chunky salsa; organic tahini; manzanilla olives; Chomps meat sticks; and canned sardines in just water.
🍎 Andrew's Take. Where I really ball out at Trader Joe's is the sliced sprouted bread, nut butters, low-carb pasta alternatives, frozen berries and spinach (for smoothies), and canned small fish. Aesthetically, the shopping experience is the closest thing to cutesy without going communist. The only flavor of communism I am into is one of prices, and the prices at TJ's do not disappoint.
🐿️ Nuts for Brazil nuts. Native to the Amazon region in South America, Brazil nuts, while slightly harder to come by, pack a nutrient-dense punch. Throughout history, they have been used medicinally in South American tribes. They're also full of fiber, protein, magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and most notably: selenium. Altogether, they play a key role as antioxidants, maintaining thyroid function, glucose metabolism (keep you full, e.g.), and supporting immunity. It's an A+ score.
🍎 Andrew's Take. Almonds (a bit overrated) macadamias (great but expensive as hell), and pumpkin seeds (somewhat hard to come by) get a lot of love in the holistic health circles, but Brazils are money and deserving of more of Mom's attention. I highly recommend you pick some up, friend.
