Get Up Stand Up
Issue #136
99.9% of people go by how they feel, hence the popularity of and belief in horoscopes and lucky socks. 0.1% can think with an objective lens.
Good morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the 2-min health email that will make you siiick (not "sick"). Let's go.
🪑 Get Up Stand Up. We are professional sitters, nearly all of us. On laptop all day? Seated. On phone? Probably seated. In car? Seated. In living room? Couched. The pandemic cemented our butts to seats, so standing may as well be a form of exercise. "Sitting and [the like] promotes cardiometabolic disorders, obesity, depression and all-cause mortality in adults [...]" Lots of promising research has been done on standing in general and standing desks in particular.
🍎 Andrew's Take. Save yourself now and get a standing desk. Level up by putting a wobble board under your feet :) Pacing back and forth while on a call or while thinking - both of these lead to increased brain activity. Stand or move to think better, avoid brain fog.
🤒 Cancer can be avoided. A study published in The Lancet saw that 45% of cancer deaths can be prevented. The top risk factors were smoking, drinking, obesity/overeating, and harmful chemicals - all of which can be avoided altogether or greatly reduced in severity. Recall that cancer is the 2nd-leading cause of death globally, just behind heart disease.
🍎 Andrew's Take. The past two years (sadly) further popularized sloth and defeatist attitudes toward sickness and life broadly speaking. The reality is that you can rid most ailments and even more stubborn diseases in mere weeks if you cut your bad habits. Everyone knows what their 'bad habits' are; if you don't, you are out to lunch entirely. Books on habits are released every years and they always crush in sales. Why? Because people love the masturbation of reading these books without ever actually implementing the lessons therein.
🥤 Wendy'z outbreak. The fast food chain sickened 37 people in four states with E. coli most likely found in the sandwich lettuce. Other details have yet to be disclosed.
🍎 Andrew's Take. Don't get your vegetables at any place with a fountain drink machine. It's bad luck and bound to make you sick.
🕊️ Tweet of the Day. I am convinced that Kumar (from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) being a stoner while acing his MCATS (intellectually "hung like a moose") is one of the great stretches of the imagination in modern cinema. The 'savant stoner' likely exists in abysmally low numbers on planet earth. If you like drugs, caffeine, OTC amphetamines, and clean nicotine should do the trick. Anything else is "just gravy!"
