What does 'healthy' mean?

Issue #122

There is no left or right in writing. Just good writing and bad writing.

Ernest Hemingway, writer

Good morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health email that is better than Elon's body. Two min. Let's go!

  • 🦠 Not again: monkeypox? Lots of misinformation has been spreading about this new virus, namely that it only spreads through gay sex. This is false, as just this past Saturday two American children were diagnosed, among countless other cases. Behind Spain, the US leads all countries in case counts; NYC just topped 1,000 confirmed cases. The symptoms include flulike symptoms, fever, sore lymph nodes, and hideous-looking sores and lesions on the skin. It can spread via inhalation (DOOM masks may be back, folks), direct contact (gloves, sleeves, pants, closed-toe footwear), indirect contact (school closings?), and ingestion (cooking meat well done, spray down food/bev containers). The symptoms last 2-4 weeks. The good news? So far(!!!), the survival rate is ~98%. To further complicate matters, shingles have been a reported side effect of mass C19 vaccinations and it turns out the resulting side effects and lesions are quite similar to those of monkeypox. Long queues at hospitals already exist in NYC, Dallas, SF, and more.

    • 🍎 Andrew's Take. What are the chances that merely months after C19 starts to die down we get hit with yet another health crisis? And it's happening months before the midterm elections? Lol! And it's a virus that has not successfully spread outside of Africa for 30+ years? Live your life, or mask up, I don't care, but don't say you weren't warned of the possibility of this thing going parabolic FAST, especially during a time of record political polarization. To the heroes and the villains, the saying goes: Never let a good crisis go to waste.

  • 💅 Eating through the recession. Coca Cola and McDonald's both posted impressive sales for Q2. Ben & Jerry's, too. Despite the White House literally trying to redefine recession, we're in one... and we will eat like it. Frozen whole foods and the spice cabinet are your friends in times like these. Resist the urge to eat whatever negative feelings this period will cause.

    • 🍎 Andrew's Take. People got fat during the pandemic. People similarly get fat during economic hurt. Lore over instinct: your instinct will say to eat hyperpalatable junk foods right now; lore (aka your ancestors) would say to eat simply and joyfully. Modern agriculture started with incredibly low yields because for most of human history, women passed down their accumulated knowledge about farming/planting/soil to their daughters and then their daughters and so on.

  • 👔 What does 'healthy' mean? In an effort to curtail climate change caused by livestock farming, the Netherlands is planning to reduce livestock by 30%. Sounds fine, right? We only have one planet, etc. Many developed countries have similar things in the works. But then you look at a new initiative called the Food Compass, coming out of Tufts University here in the US. In essence, it is a new scoring system for foods: the higher the score, the more of it you should eat. The man in charge has some interesting opinions on what to eat and what not to eat. Examples include: Lucky Charms instead of eggs (regardless of preparation), canned pineapple in heavy syrup (known as one of the least nutritious fruits) over ground beef, Almond M&M's over cheddar cheese. See a pattern here? This is the latest and greatest blueprint for the White House on all things nutrition.

    • 🍎 Andrew's Take. Ok, this is bananas, gang. AM I TAKING CRAZY PILLS HERE?!?!?! WTF IS HAPPENING? Animal-derived foods? Nope, candy please. Here is yet another sterile and glossy website for an organization (WEF, CIA ring a bell?), only to scream at me to eat Frosted Mini Wheats before a piece of whole-wheat toast. Unreal. Expect more sneaky clowntown behavior from the powers that be as we sink deeper into a much-overdo recession. This is not conspiracy nonsense... the chart linked above literally says to eat hyper-processed sweets before whole foods. What a wild ride!
