Issue #083

The older I get, the surer I am that I’m not running the show. Leonard Cohen, "the voice of god"

G-Morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health digest that goes down like an orange gatorade after the first set of a tennis match. 2 min. Let's go.

  1. 👐 Scientism. The religion of science whereby "priests" get to touch little... no no no, not that. The real issue with "believe the science" is that legit experts are often found on both sides of any empirical question. Weight loss? Yeah, two dudes from Harvard lock horns on that topic? Covid? Stanford guy says get boosted sixteen times while UChicago lady claims the boosters increase your chances of getting C19. IMO, we incorrectly separate the white lab coats from the navy business suit: scientists are not in it for the money! It's about the new frontier, blowing shit up, and lime green beakers! Scientists don't get horny either... just sterile, boring, and focused entirely on "the work". Rofl. But then you read... a Dr. Ralph Snyderman, almost single-handedly responsible for lifting Duke University's medical school to the #3 spot in the country, aided the Sackler family in their opioid scheme that, say, opioids are not that addictive. You heart that and never see Snyderman's doctorly smile the same again. There are mostly good actors out there but how are we supposed to distinguish? Become your own doctor, listen to your body, and never cancel an appointment.

  2. 💊 Most profitable drug ever. Heart disease remains the #1 killer in the US, ahead of cancer, accidents, and stroke. If you are a drug-maker, death means dollar signs. It turns out that cholesterol-lowering (statin) Lipitor is the most profitable drug in the history of medicine. **teeth chatteringly shook** Basically, the health establishment in 60s/70s threw down their first and called saturated fat and cholesterol the demons behind heart disease. By the 80s, the drug-makers were on it and have been raking it in ever since, despite heart disease outcomes actually getting worse lmao. Again and again: follow the money, fam. The saturated fat/cholesterol myth has been debunked many times, most notably in 2014 when a very thorough documentary aired on ABC; the drug-makers did not like what they saw so they got ABC to first rescind and then expunge the doc hahahahha. Sick. Countless longer-term side effects accompany these all-too-popular statin drugs. The drug-makers' response: Yeahhhhh, who gives a fuck?

  3. 🏀 Mood mood mood. The results are in from Gallup's 2022 annual Mood of the Nation survey: 69% Americans are very/somewhat satisfied with their overall quality of life, down from 84% in 2020. Not a huge shocker with sinflation eating wallets and monkeypox not providing the crisis we masochists need to tap meaning in post-everything internet life lol. Feeling like you're part of this statistic? Jump around. Literally. Vigorous movement (even for a few min) "influences your mental health via many physiological and biochemical mechanisms, like effects on endorphins, mitochondria, and neurotransmitters." Whatever you listened to on repeat when you were 18 (post emo phase, but before adult life jaded the h3LL out of you)... play that, on high volume, now. Something like that.

  4. 🕊️ Tweet of the Day. Lololololololololol. RIP Patients in America :c
