Grandma wisdom

Issue #161

Good talk, son.

GM 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the 2-min health email for those who want off the treadmill and onto the path paved with loose dirt. Along the way there is a tall tree with hearted initials carved into its side. Come with me.

πŸ‘΅ Grandma wisdom.  Over Thanksgiving my mom's mom, 85, shared with the adult table  the five things one needs to be happy. Here they are: someone to love, something to do, something to hope for, something to believe in, and something to laugh about. When asked to narrow it further, she said that Faith and Laughter were the top two.  🍎 Andrew's Take. While I think it is a nice list, they are too abstract for my liking. I will take a stab: Try to smile more. Both by yourself (I talk to myself constantly fwiw) and with others. The smile almost always gets returned to you, generating a mutual affinity in less than a second. The positive charge makes you feel good, which puts you in a more receptive state of mind, which allows finer observations to be made. Speak aloud those observations to those around. Now you have a friend. You do that enough over and over again, you have someone(s) to love, something(s) to do, something(s) to hope for, something(s) you believe in, and obviously stuff to laugh about. That is but one viable path I have found. You never know what people could be going through, so for you to be angel in even the briefest moment is a divine act. Yes, I believe in angels. They don't dwell in AI. They live outside your apartment.

πŸ„ Magic mushrooms for breakfast!  A new bill in California would decriminalize magic mushrooms and ayahuasca for personal use. Some state senator said": β€œThese drugs literally save lives and are some of the most promising treatments we have for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addiction.” The bill will have its first hearing and vote this spring.  🍎 Andrew's Take. The line must be thick between "clinical use" and "personal/recreational use" when it comes to high-intensity psychotropic drugs like these and even weed. Bad trip? Brain/emotional headquarters could be cooked for years and years. Good trip? Who says you don't want to do it again... once a quarter, once a month, fuck, once a week. These things are a slippery slope. Many of these issues can be alleviated if not solved through vigorous exercise. There should be a rule whereby one can only get access to these powerful mind-altering medicines if they can prove that a diet/exercise/sleep protocol has been tried. This country is notorious for open-up "wonder pills" but the real magic is oftentimes both more accessible and more effective (a long walk, a good boozeless sleep, a video-free chat with a cross-country friend). On standby.
