Halloweaning Off the Bottle
Issue #155
I don't want a bar with high ceilings and big screen TVs. I want a bar that looks like it was carved out of an ancient hillside.
GM 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the 2-min health email that insures you against all the demonic forces that may attack you today. Peace b w u. OK, let's go.
🔞 Sober October. As is tradition in some "high-T" male circles, October is a month of setting down the bottle. Similar to a 3-day fasting cycle, the first thing most people experience during a month of sobriety is withdrawal. Drinking even twice a week is a mild addiction, which means withdrawal occurs. A void is created and since humans hate emptiness, something else will come along and fill that void. Food, fucking, tv, porn, the internet are the most likely vices. The spirit will often find itself in a potent state of boredom and/or realization that the bottle makes life a helluva lot more fun. If observed with open eyes and a critical mind, this can be a crucial reset. In the words of a famous podcaster, Make America Bored Again, which he argues is the path to a light type of enlightenment or a discovery of what most interests you, undrunk on base and immediate desires. 🍎 Andrew's Take. As punching-down millennials don broccoli hair wigs to mock their Zoomer successors this Halloween, this monthlong sobriety will be by and large broken. I personally love to booze it up, coming from a Scots-Irish ancestry that has a ball in spite of our middling IQs. These experiments, albeit short-lived, effectively highlight our own personal relationship with dopamine - the king of neurotransmitters in the internet age. As any unforgiving king does - without a push of resistance - it will rule its subject with total abandon. Can we swipe the crown? What's the point? Can we instead rule it?
🥤 Some sips on booze. Dr. Peter Attia recently reviewed a hangover pill. His conclusion: it barely works. Sorry, folks: "After all, the only truly fool-proof way to prevent a hangover is to avoid consuming alcohol in the first place." Related: Hypebeast magazine reviewed a "better for you" low-proof vodka. The company is female-owned, plants trees for every bottle sold, and - get this - still gets you drunk. 60 proof is basically 80 proof (the standard for vodka). 🍎 Andrew's Take. Live it up, gang, alcohol is going nowhere, especially on the brink of a global recession. No amount of marketing will change the fact that the species has been slugging back the poison for millennia. Alcohol-free alternatives have their own sex appeal (I guess to some circles in Brooklyn) and won't sabotage your sleep like a long wet night out dancing in da club; but people are people and people love boring old dopamine way more than saving the manatees or some minority group. I will say, anecdotally, that women should drink in smaller quantities than men. For reasons that are self-evident.
