Walk like wampa πŸ‘΄

Issue #143

The Rolling Stones debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show. They were pretty disgusting.

GM 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the 2-min health email that really really rips! OK?! Word! Let's go.

  • πŸ‘΄ Walk like wampa. Walking is good and everyone should do it every day. But walking only activates about 40% of your muscles. Enter Nordic walking, which uses 90% of your muscles (upper and lower body). It is simply walking with ski poles. You will look like a loon in NYC with the sticks, but who cares. Because this style of walking requires about 20% more oxygen consumption when compared to mere normie walking at the same speed. In middle-aged adults, Nordic walking led to less stress and anxiety, a decrease in body fat and an increase in core/leg strength.

    • 🍎 Andrew's Take. Tolkien wrote that Gandalf was about 12,000 years old when the LOTR Trilogy starts. His key? He walked with a staff. Everywhere.

  • 😴 Sleepy time. Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman aka the HÜbermensch talks a lot about getting high quality sleep and staying asleep longer. We have covered here before that you should step outside for 10-30 mins upon waking up, as this kicks into gear your circadian biology. But also: cold showers in the morning (post-walk) and hot showers at night before bed. Both of these will let you sleep like a king during peacetime. A few more for the autists out there are using only candlelight or moonlight (meaning no phones/laptops) at night, wearing black eye masks and ear plugs, and even elevating the end of your bed aka your feet. Taken altogether, it's a homerun.

    • 🍎 Andrew's Take. I'm personally scouring the web and kitschy resale shops in south Brooklyn for some 18th century candles fit for an Irish aristocrat. Shouts out to Barry Lyndon!!!!

  • πŸ•ŠοΈ Tweet of the Day. They don't teach you this one in med school, folks.
