π§ Early puberty, what up? Looks like prepubescence in girls is reaching an early grave. According to a report published this month, since the pandemic started, record numbers of girls as young as 5-8 have been developing breasts and starting menstruation. Why does this matter? Early puberty is linked to a higher risk for depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and antisocial behavior. Researchers are tying these observations to lifestyle changes related to lockdowns, such as stress, EMF exposure, poor diet, low physical activity, increased obesity, and bad sleep. My hunch is that more reports like this will surface as we inch away from the C19 peak. New moms and dads will have the distinct pleasure of dealing with the consequences of their young daughters, for the past two years, being treated like caged livestock.
πΊοΈ Blue Zone out. Some are just built different. In 2004, two European demographers coined and defined the term "blue zones" as communities in which an unusual proportion of people live unusually long (90+) and healthy lives (virtually no metabolic disease other than, uh, aging). There are only 5: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California. "Your environment influences and reinforces your habits whether theyβre healthy or unhealthy." A handful of daily habits these places all share: family, no smoking, plant-forward diet (not vegan tho), social engagement, and constant moderate physical activity (not sitting a desk for 16 hours). America could learn a thing or six.
π΄π» Four noble (longevity) truths. In exploring the world of wellness, you can always go (unnecessarily) deeper and more esoteric. But at the end of the day, core principles will get you 80% there. Here are some of those core principles: zone 2 training (fast walking or slow jogging, light rowing or swimming, biking); intermittent fasting (12-16 hours) because your body needs to not have to work sometimes; resistance training (aka using weight against gravity to build muscle); and a balanced diet that does not make you feel like shit (just listen to your body, fatigue after certain meals... your body will communicate to your brain). It's my job (a) to remind you of these Big Themes and (b) to entertain you with the fringe stuff too. God is in the details - in that final 20%.
π₯Ά Sleep in the nude. This tweet below. As a rule of thumb, humans sleep best in a cold room. Background: we lived in caves without space heaters, air conditioning, and hot cocoa. I don't make the rules.
