Microplastics for breakfast

Issue #116

You were super duper today, getting your COVID vaccine Elmo!

Elmo's Father, who's evidently from Nashville or something (listen to his 'accent'), "Sesame Street" PSA from June 28, 2022

Good morning 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health email that is way better than walking around Soho alongside wealthy teens dressed in expensive trash bags. Two min. Let's go!

  1. 🥦 Weaker with age. Sadly, muscle mass and strength naturally decrease as we age. Just a fact. The good news? You can slow down the muscle loss: "Increased activation of muscle fibers through physical activity initiates a cascade of events that attenuate muscle strength loss."

    1. 🍎 Andrew's Take. Exercise as often as the news aims to make you really really willy mad: every day.

  2. 🌱 Microplastics for breakfast. A new study out of Amsterdam found microplastics in meat, milk, and animal blood (cows and pigs). "All contained microplastics including polyethylene and polystyrene, which is better known as the main ingredient in Styrofoam." This plastic can accumulate in organs, leading to a number of health concerns, many of which require more research.

    1. 🍎 Andrew's Take. Even though this whole microplastic obsession is young in age, common sense says that tiny credit cards should not be floating around our blood and organs. I bet it will have outsized and profound impacts on metabolic health in the years to come. Stay the fudge away from plastic water bottles and anything Styrofoam. xoxo

  3. 🍭 Elephants cure cancer? A UK study identified elephant genes that prevent the spread of cancer cells. Evidently, elephants have 40 versions of a gene that regulates cell growth and division, while humans only have 2. Could be huge, as cancer is #2 killer in the US.

    1. 🍎 Andrew's Take. Maybe this applies to your grandkids, but for you? Slap an illegal smile on as you secure your ballcap, floss daily, befriend your farmer, and drink obscene volumes of pure water. Buckets of it.

  4. 🕊️ Tweet of the Day. Factoid!

How about them Apples? Hit me with any comments or questions. Love hearing from you folks.

Your friend,

Andrew🍎
