Your second brain
Issue #079
I was a coward, then changed it. Ernest Hemingway, writer
GM 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health email that saves lives and makes you smile. Gimme 2 min. Let's go.
🔍 Where he go? Dr. Anthony Fauci... where is that dude? The patron saint of global health is seemingly nowhere to be found. Reaching near celebrity status for two years and forcing Americans to learn what C-D-C actually stood for, it appears that post-allegations of the origin of the virus and his handling of such (to mask or not to mask, who should get single double triple vaccinated, social distancing floor stickers, etc.) has his PR team on the defensive. My simple calculus is this (with room for nuance!): unhealthy country = unreliable health officials in said country. Would you trust a fat trainer with bad skin if you wanted to lose weight and glow up? I suppose without his infallible advice on how to be healthy in tricky times, we will have to resort to getting sunlight, drinking water, walking distances, and skipping the 72oz Sierra Mist.
🧠 Your second brain. Your first brain is the one in your head, while your second brain is your gut. Some of the best medicine for your gut is probiotics (beneficial bacteria) which can improve your neurological health (i.e. your first brain). Some studies have even shown that taking good care of your gut can yield anti-Alzheimer's properties. Many probiotic supplements are good, but fermenting your own vegetables is way cheaper and just as effective. Bad gut, smooth brain. Good gut, groovy brain.
🍶 Ending the alcohol debate. Journalists in this community LOVE to tie or untie alcohol to happiness. How many margaritas does a mom need per week to maximize her happiness if she has three kids and they're all Leos???? Whatever. The questions that are more interesting to me are ones like: Why do we drink? Alcohol is literally poison and yet lots of good can come from it indirectly... how much good? What about affects on sleep and energy levels? The news: a new study found that older women who drink >2x a week have a better quality of life. Explanations include "elevated mood, enhanced sociability, and reduced stress." This is of course is a slippery slope... a few drinks a week with friends is different than slugging six whiskeys by yourself in a dimly lit pub in Midtown. Look, the alcohol debate will rage on (same way that nerds will spar over optimal sleep hours) but in the end it will probably come down to how you feel before, during, and after you drink. Our bodies are smarter than our brains, so just pay heed.
🕊️ Tweet of the Day. This is does not mean you should be a sociopath and swap masks for every new conversation. It relates more to your mood... you can easily overindulge your own moodiness ("aw shucks well I guess I am just in a horrific mood all day oh well!"). There are ways to take the edge off especially tough days: go for a walk with a small piece of nicotine gum, listen to your favorite album, drink water until you have to pee for 3 minutes straight. The very overthinking is what can sabotage an otherwise beautiful and divine day.
How do you like them Apples? If you ever need anything, hit reply. Love hearing from readers.
