Which salt is good?

Issue #153

Clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.

Psalm 45:3

GM 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the 2-min health email that is, uh, on some lists. OK, let's go.

🛢️ Seed oils get rinsed. Seed oils, like canola and soybean and corn and sunflower, have been getting shit on for the past three years. Prior to that, the ridicule for them was reserved for fringe health twitter, ancestral paleo maniacs, and yoga moms. Today, the hate for seed oils is mainstream news. But they've been around: after WWII, seed oils lifted off in popularity because they were cheap and shelf stable and mostly flavorless (pour them into anything). What is confusing is that the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology both recommend seed oils over saturated fats like butter, ghee, and coconut oil. 🍎 Andrew's Take. First things first: seed are not going to kill you in smaller amounts but they are NOT good for your health. It's the epitome of a hyper-processed food, a distant relative to its whole food parent. Any measurable nutrients from the original vegetable/seed/nut/legume has been destroyed almost entirely. Even if the TikTokers are failing the ACT in records numbers because they can't read for more than 30 seconds straight... they're at least directionally correct on this seed oil crusade.

🥨 Salt's good for you. There is a ample literature on the dangers of salt, mostly from Boomers, who think salt causes heart and blood pressure problems. Interestingly, nearly all of this research is on refined salt (aka table salt aka one of the four white devils). What is under-researched is natural unrefined sea salt. This "good salt" is packed with electrolytes which are key for recovery, producing energy, regulating the balance of water around your cells, regulating muscle contractions (like your heartbeat), and maintaining a healthy acid balance. 🍎 Andrew's Take. It's funny to think about how many fake stories we've been told about food... salt is bad, Caesar salad is good, orange juice is bad, Beyond burgers are good. Fountains of lies. One thing I will say is that when you eat out, the food is doused in seed oils and bad table salt... too much of these and you will look and feel awful. The mirror will tell the truth (inflamed and oily skin, soft in torso, fatigue). However, the Himalayan pink rock salt has been heralded by beautiful sun goddesses in southern California for decades... time to nab a jar. The good stuff. Divine.

🕊️ Tweet of the Day. Time will tell but I'm fading the long vape bet. What happens when you heat plastic in the microwave? Right.
