Watching news ad infinitum
Issue #077
I think clever people think that poor people are stupid. Norm Macdonald, comic
GM 🦁 This is Andrew's Apples, the health email that is short and sweet like a Shire hobbit. Gimme 2 min. Let's go.
💸 Even the rich poor. Peeping a new survey by LendingClub, 36% of Americans making $250k+ are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Lol. Let that one sink in. One third of the "financially educated" have little to no money left to invest into shitcoins. Stuff like this makes me v bearish on the state of the American. If someone is reckless with their clowntown spending habits and their insatiable appetite to keep up with the Joneses, what about their diet, sleep, exercise? My professional opinion: it ain't look good, cap.
💤 Sleep after eating. One of the best ways to disrupt your sleep is to wolf down a monster meal right before going to bed. Basically, your body goes into digestion mode, which raises your body temp, which disrupts your sleep (rule of thumb: humans sleep optimally in the cold). My family growing up always ate late, just something we did and still do when we're together. The Spaniards are notorious for this as well (eat at 10, club at midnight, tapas at 6a). People gotta live. Another thing to note is that continually getting bad sleep makes you eat more (wonky hormonal adjustments allow this to happen). So, 80% of the time, try to finish eating at least 3h before bedtime. And if you live in New York City, g*d help you.
📺 Watching news ad infinitum. Experiment: sit down and watch the news for two hours straight. CNN, Fox, MSNBC... you know what I mean when I say "news". What you quickly realize is that it's bloodsport in the form of fast food: the wickedness of humanity, death, rape, unspeakable acts, more things to worry about (as if your plate wasn't already full). Why cover that car accident deaths have dramatically decreased when you can cover how gun deaths have increased but by an order of magnitude less? Fact. It's the spin zone, baby! When late comedian Bill Hicks called the tv set "Lucifer's Dreambox" he wasn't talking about Seinfeld or The Simpsons or The Office (historic programming) - he was talking about the talking heads. The ones banking, literally, on you (a) getting mad and (b) taking zero responsibility for your small and manageable life. Even more, I think Hicks was trying to say we are increasingly outsourcing our own thinking and feeling to a box. Entering a void and forgetting the flashlight. Funny how so many families in the 20th century had tv viewing limits, say one hour a day per child... yeah, maybe high time to reinstitute that rule, except for the grown-up.
🕊️ Tweet of the Day. Reminds me of the Kevin Kelly line that goofing off is underrated while efficiency is overrated, esp. in the US. On balance, we likely need more dancing and less CrossFit. Fcuk about and fcuk around!!!!
How do you like them Apples? If you ever need anything, hit reply. Love hearing from readers.
